Forest Hills Kitchen Renovation

the challenge

While spending months sequestering at home during the pandemic, the homeowners envisioned maximizing the enjoyment of their home by expanding the kitchen and reconfiguring the first floor. One of Crane Builders’ design partners developed the new layout, which also required our structural engineer to design beams, allowing the removal and relocation of one third of the walls on the first floor while not disturbing the second floor above.

our approach

In what might have looked like a high stakes game of Jenga, the Crane Builders team removed walls, added temporary supports, and brought in heavy duty lifts to install engineered steel flitch beams and several other wood beams. The beams were strategically placed to both bear the load and provide framework for a beautiful coffered ceiling, centered over a massive 16’ island. Custom millwork disguised the beams while adding aesthetic interest. Careful attention was paid to add concrete piers and beams to support the weight of the oversized island with its quartz countertops, built-in appliances and beaded inset custom cabinetry.

Since the homeowners often entertain clients, family, and friends, a multi-purpose working scullery was incorporated in the design. Its door can be closed to keep the main kitchen clutter-free and out of sight during gatherings. To increase natural lighting, a triple window was added in the breakfast nook to match an existing triple window in the adjoining office. The back exterior doors were replaced with new taller doors to compliment the home’s tall ceilings.

The new floor plan also included creating offices for both husband and wife, reworking the dining room and even sneaking a powder room in under the main staircase.

the results

The results achieved the homeowners’ dream of an extraordinary chef’s kitchen, with the addition of top-of-the-line built-in appliances and a scullery to keep preparations and clean-up chores out of sight. A stunning 16’ island beneath an elegant coffered ceiling serves as an impressive centerpiece for gatherings. The natural flow of the entire first floor is greatly improved, and the kitchen is a vibrant center of activity for family and guests, making the homeowners’ dream a reality.

“Crane's communication and follow up is wonderful and why we recommend you to friends!”
